Having fussed with an Epson 1280 for years (and rarely producing a print I was pleased with), I was surprised to find that my second print from the Pro9000 Mark II equaled the quality of lab prints I have ordered. I have been happy with every print produced by this printer since.
I have not formally calibrated the printer to the monitor I use, but find the colors match very well, so I do not adjust any color parameter in the print driver. I only set quality and paper parameters. I am printing from a Macbook Pro with a Dell monitor using, primarily, Nikon Capture NX software. I tend to print directly from NEF raw prints, having post-processed them in Capture NX. After my first print (the sole failure), I set the parameters in NX to "Use Source Profile" in order to hand-off color management to the printer drivers.
I was also surprised and pleased with both the high speed and low noise when printing large photos.
It is not a problem for my home office, but those with less available space might find the printer's size a liability.
Finally, I find the printer extremely forgiving with paper source. I have used Epson glossy and matte paper and Office Depot matte (13x19) and card stock and produced prints of very good color fidelity.
