I've been wanting to try my hand at printing out my digital pictures for some time now and did not have the patience to deal with an online merchant. First I picked up Canon's Pixma IP2600 for a whopping $40, this was OK - better then nothing but left a lot to be desired.
With the IP4700 I've been able to print out some nice 8.5" x 11" prints with little effort. The ink cartridges don't last very long (esp on high quality + vivid print settings) but the quality of this printer is great given the price. I'll forewarn you, I am no photography expert and certainly have not bothered to calibrate my monitor or printer - but even with my makeshift setup I'm happy with the results. I've only printed out on Canon's high-quality glossy paper so can't comment on other paper types.
Individual tanks, borderless printing, and separate print heads (not contained in the ink tanks like most cheap inkjets) are what make this stand out, especially for under $100. If you want something just to print out a hard-copy of a few shots, this will serve you well at the cost of ink... I think my first batch I got about 20-30 x 4x6's (enough to fill a 3.5'x2' corkboard) and about 5 x 8.5x11's starting with full tanks, 2 colors were almost empty by the end of that deluge.
Lightroom worked basically flawlessly with this, even running under VMWare. Shouldn't have any issues with compatibility on this.
